Review: The Singalong Society for Singletons by Katey Lovell.

the-singalong-society-for-singletonsSince July my love of musicals has been growing and growing and growing, so to see a book incorporating loads of incredible musicals made me extremely happy and I knew instantly that this was a book I would have to pick up.

The Singalong Society for Singletons* begins with Monique and Issy, two single friends. Following problems in Hope’s (Monique’s sister) relationship, she temporarily moves in with the girls and it isn’t long before the Singalong Society for Singletons is officially formed.

The society is a weekly meeting on Friday evenings when these friends get together to watch and singalong to their favourite tracks from musicals, such as The Lion King and Wicked. However, when Issy invites a couple of new people into the society, bringing more life and relationships into the group, things certainly get more interesting…

I really adored this book. The combination of musicals and romance work wonderfully together in this novel. It is a lovely and very enjoyable read and in fact, now that I have had time to think about it more I’ve decided to take my review from a 3* rating to a 4* because it was such a fantastic idea for a book and carried out so well too.

Each chapter was dedicated to a different musical and there was such a splendid range, some I was very familiar with, and some I wasn’t so much. Despite this, I still loved it because it encouraged me to look into other musicals; if it wasn’t for this book I might never have watched West Side Story! At every Singalong Society meeting, someone different picks the musical which I love because it enables us to learn more about characters through the musicals they pick, therefore allowing us to get to know the characters better. I also couldn’t help but get really happy whenever a musical I loved was mentioned.

I loved all of the characters; although I cannot say I got particularly attached to anyone and didn’t feel like we really knew Justin very well, so it was very clear what direction Mon’s love life was going in.

Nevertheless, each chapter made me eager to watch the musicals myself and definitely made me fall in love with the idea of a Singalong Society. The end of each chapter made me excited to read the next one and upon finishing the book I just wanted to watch and singalong to a tonne of musicals (writing this review is giving me that same feeling too, actually). Anyone up for forming a Singalong Society of our own?!

Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it if you are a musical fanatic like myself.

Have you read The Singalong Society for Singletons? What did you think?

P.S. I am so sorry for my infrequent blogging lately. I’ve been struggling to find time outside of work and even energy, but hopefully it’s just the weather that’s bringing this lack of motivation on and before you know it I’ll be back to regular posting again!
